Training notes-karate class kick drills

We worked on some basic kick defense drills. First using an open hand parry adn then blocking with legs.

Remember to focus on having a good foundation AND good balance. One of the big take-aways from these drills is recovering balance as well as practicing some defense moves.

Tight fingers & timing are important when using the hands..as always body positioning is key!

Timing, balance and recovery are also hard when using legs, but legs defenses are usually more practical…

Stance, alignment and recovery need to be always in your mind when training.

Karate training notes – basic combos circle theory

We added the combos from the basics into the 25 basics.

Recall that for sweep/punch/block if follows the same concepts found in other karate basics, extending and gathering power and momentum. Remember to recover your stance and pay attention to balance alignment!!

For the combos also remember to make all the techniques distinct and correct. Again, concepts need to be applied. Body positioning is always important.

Training Notes Karate koteate hubud and kata

Good round of basics with the addition of some combo techniques.

Remember, when doing the combos it’s better to slow up some and do the technique correctly, rather than shortcut it to try and keep up. Try not to slow the class down, but take the time you can to focus on the technique. So if you’r struggling, keep stepping but focus on the technique at hand…

Koteate intro went well. Remember to breathe and stay loose until the point of impact.

Protocol note: Remember when someone who outranks you demonstrates something, makes a correction or answers a question respond with “Hai!” and “Domo Arigato!” using the appropriate title.

Hubud went well with the addition of a drill to upset stances. Remember: the drill works both ways and on a couple of levels.

  • Tori needs to seek the right time to disrupt the uke’s balance

  • Uke (as always) can use this an opportunity to both practice intent and focus on an attack as well as using it as a drill to practice recovering balance.

Kata looked great!!

Training notes – Karate, drills & kata

Another good class!!

Added front side kick & back kick. Good questions on leg positioning relative to where kick is headed. More discusion of power vs placement.

Punching drills on the pads helped reinforce (no pun intended) wrist alignment and gave a good workout.

Great work on kata! Some good examples of just “phoning it in” though. Remember, if you’re bored with a kata, then there’s something you’re not thinking about. Speed up, slow down, focus on footwork, etc. As you’re learning it, take it in small chunks.

karate and matwork

First class in uniform!!

We worked basics & added a couple of kicks.

Remember kicks begin and end in the same place.

Intro to matwork!!

Relax!! Exhale and stay loose. Remember the circles apply here too. Tongue in the roof of the mouth!!

We finished out the class with a discussion about the difference between a customer and a student.

Karate Class notes

Worked through all the blocks and talked some pneumonic devices to remember the ordering.

Learned that being faster than sensei on the basics can equal pushups. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

Ippons to round out the class.

A bit about breathing and kiai usage.

Stances & stepping – “C stepping” and going for a wider stance will help, for now.

Rounded out with kata. Good class!!

Class notes

Circles!!!

Lots of talk of circles, big and small. In the stepping, in the blocks and hand movements etc.

As always…go slow! Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. If you can’t see it, you wont be able to polish it.

We covered the basic protocol for opening & closing class. Read that manual!
